As a proud Canadian, I will not forget what happened on February 24, 2002. I thought it might be a good idea to remind people.

Got Off To A Bad Start
It wasn't easy. They learned the hard way as they lost 5 - 2 to Sweden in their first game. Mats Sundin scored a couple of goals against Curtis Joseph.
Paul Kariya -- Focused and Determined
Paul Kariya came up big throughout the whole tournament, and also did a great job of getting Canada on the board in the gold medal game (by tying the score at one a piece). On that goal he did an excellent job of reading the play, Pronger passes to Lemieux, Lemieux fakes the shot, Karyia scores.
Jarome Iginla -- Clutch Forward
Did a great job on the team, it's pretty hard to believe that this was his first time at the Olympics. Jarome and Joe Sakic played very well together. He scored two key goals in the gold medal game.

"Gagne, Sakic, Pass in front... SCORES! Ignila going to the net! It is Canada 2 - USA 1!" -- Bob Cole, HNIC
Theo Fleury -- Physical Element
He always seems to get himself into trouble. But despite his personal problems, Theo Fleury did a great job of playing a tough offensive game.
Adam Foote -- Physical Defenseman
Amazing defenseman. He played physical, just like Theo, but what I like about Adam Foote is he knows when to draw the line. He rarely takes dumb penalties.
Mario Lemieux -- Captain
He showed great leadership as captain of Team Canada and helped provide a nation with unforgettable memories. Mario Lemieux will go down in history as one of the greatest players alive.

"Right through the legs of Lemieux, the Pronger pass, right to Kariya and he's got Richter out of the net." -- Harry Neale, HNIC
Eric Lindros and Ryan Smyth -- Physical With Great Scoring Touch
What can I say about Eric Lindros? He's the one guy that everybody wants to get his hands on. He plays a physical game but can still score as many goals.
Ryan Smyth loves playing for his country. Has never once rejected an invitation to represent Canada. He played through his knee injury and managed to still rack up the points.
Scott Niedermayer -- Speedy Defenseman
One of the best defensemen in the entire league. Boy, were we lucky to have him on our side. Scott is an excellent skater and two-way player. He is one of my favourite defensemen (But of course not above Bryan McCabe)
Martin Brodeur -- Speed, Agility, and Focus
Brodeur was outstanding, and played consistently. He never let Canada down and no matter how bad the situation seemed, he remained focused.
Joe Sakic -- Our MVP
Definitely our MVP. Joe Sakic was there when we needed him and scored critical goals at critical times. It's no wonder he's so successful. Joe Sakic is a gentleman, a sniper, and a true leader.

"Hang on they get a break... it's gonna be a break... It is Joe Sakic... SCORES! JOOOEE SAKIC SCORES! and that makes it 5 - 2 Canada! Surely that's gotta be it.. quite enough!" -- Bob Cole, HNIC
Stevie Yzerman -- A Year to Remember
No doubt, this has to be one of Steve Yzerman's most memorable season ever. First he wins gold at the Olympics, and then wins the Stanley Cup! All while playing on 'one leg.' He was a great role model for all the first timers. The 'C' that he wears proudly on his Detroit jersey stands for captain, but it also stands for courageous.
50 Years
50 years of disappointment, for four years of pride, glory, and bragging rights. When it was all over, we were the champions. We can now officially declare, Canada owns hockey... period ... well at least for the next four years.
Champions
"Your Olympic Salt Lake City 2002, men's ice hockey...
gold medal Canada!"
-- Bob Cole, HNIC
